Project Closed Circuit
Making Cities Hubs of Battery Circularity
The need for sustainable batteries has never been more urgent. Battery demand has surged by approximately 33% annually over the past 30 years, with last year being the most significant increase yet. To meet this demand, it has never been more critical to establish a sustainable and economically viable secondary market for electric vehicle (EV) batteries to reduce the demand for mining minerals and support the clean energy transition.
Building off of an Ideas Lab we hosted last summer, The Exchange’s latest initiative, Project Closed Circuit, aims to cultivate a robust circular economy that advances a secondary market for EV batteries in urban centers.
Cities are at the heart of the EV revolution. They are home to the majority of EV owners, fleet operators, and charging infrastructure, making them ideal testing grounds for innovative solutions to battery circularity. As hubs of innovation, policy, and infrastructure, urban centers have the potential to lead the way in creating sustainable, localized solutions for battery circularity.
The initiative will leverage the expertise of The Exchange, its partners, and a diverse array of stakeholders to publish cutting-edge content, lead key industry events, and facilitate learning, and collaboration that advances battery technology and regulation.
The surge in EV adoption is expected to continue with demand increasing eight to 11-fold by 2035. Nearly 95% of this growth is driven by the rise in EV sales, with global EV stock skyrocketing from 100,000 in 2013 to over 40 million in 2023.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Project Closed Circuit (PCC) is advancing battery circularity to help mitigate the carbon footprint of energy storage and EV batteries. This initiative aims to transform cities into hubs for the efficient management and reuse of EV batteries — contributing to a significant reduction in carbon emissions and energy waste. PCC operates through three interconnected pillars of action:
