The Climate Campus

The New York Climate Exchange’s physical campus is coming to Governors Island in 2029.

With an expected opening for the fall semester of 2029, The Exchange’s state-of-the-art home on Governors Island will serve as a global hub for climate research, education, convening and innovation. This capital project—including both new construction and adaptive reuse of historic buildings—represents a major investment in the future of Governors Island and a key component in NYC’s plan to continue its leadership in climate innovation.

The goal for our hub is for visitors to experience a sustainable community that inspires a new vision for how we live, learn and play in a climate-resilient future.

Once open to the public, The Climate Campus enhance the existing natural, cultural, and educational resources that make Governors Island unique. The initial phase of the project will encompass:

  • Academic, research, and convening spaces showcasing sustainable building practices

  • A blend of new construction and thoughtfully restored historic buildings

  • An additional four acres of new public open space, enhancing the Island’s existing 120-acre network of open areas

The Hub will serve as a model for sustainability, deploying energy-positive design strategies, including mass timber construction, a solar canopy, and adaptive reuse of existing buildings.

Our construction manager, Skanska USA, was the most recent addition to our world-class architects, landscapers, engineers, and other industry leaders that we’ve assembled to bring this innovative project to life.

Challenge

Our Sustainable Solutions Challenge called for groundbreaking, implementation-ready innovations that can be integrated into our future hub. This challenge invited innovators to use our space as a living laboratory for sustainability and propose scalable, adaptable solutions in:

Built Environment & Design, Infrastructure Systems & Resource Efficiency, Resilient Ecosystems & Landscape Design, and other unconventional ideas.

Winning teams will have the opportunity to showcase their innovations on a high-visibility, globally recognized climate campus, engage with policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers during
Climate Week NYC, and collaborate with experts to explore real-world applications of their solutions.
