Governors Island Environmental Observatory
The Governors Island Environmental Observatory (GIEO) is a new urban observatory that will monitor and study environmental changes. As New York transitions from fossil fuels to renewable energy, GIEO will monitor and study environmental changes in support of the goals outlined in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.
Located on Governors Island, at the heart of New York Harbor, GIEO will establish environmental baselines and measure air quality parameters, meteorological data, and greenhouse gas emissions in real-time. The observatory was launched during Climate Week NYC 2025, following a collaborative event hosted by The New York Climate Exchange, Stony Brook University, Pratt Institute, and the University of Helsinki,
GIEO aims to become an "Atmospheric Supersite" conducting comprehensive measurements while serving as a center for public education and outreach about climate change mitigation efforts. It will connect to a global network of urban observatories and serve as a beacon of progress—demonstrating the environmental and health benefits of New York's green transformation.
