Campus+ Collaboration for The New York Climate Exchange: A Session at the 2025 AASHE Conference & Expo

Universities work with a diverse array of partners, across several sectors, and on several topics. In most cases, a bilateral partnership is formed around a narrow, desired outcome, such as a university working with city government on job training programs, or with one private firm on the commercialization of a particular innovation. The Exchange’s ‘big tent’ model, which brings 11 academic partners together with the private sector and over 30 community organizations, offers a unique value proposition, and one that is essential to tackle an issue as cross-cutting as climate change. This panel will explore how The Exchange is promoting climate action on several campuses, through its power to convene different sectors, foster climate tech, deepen educational opportunities for students, and test solutions for the built environment as it constructs a 250,000 ft2 campus on Governors Island, in New York Harbor. It will also cover some of the sustainability innovations deployed as part of our capital project, including mass timber, geothermal systems, and a solar array.
